ZDH, SEQUA: Indo-German Partnership Program

The program was designed to improve the capacities of 14 South Indian Business Member Organisations: Federations of Chambers of Commerce and Industry as well as other Industrial Associations. The German "Zentralverband des Deutschen Handwerks" (Federation of German Chambers of Skilled Crafts and Small Industries) acted as cooperation partner and resource. The program was running from 2003 to 2009; from 2006 onwards a GES expert has coordinated the program in India.

The program was designed to support the Indian partners in building up capacities in three main areas:

  • Internal administration: In the last three years the program supported 7 of the 14 organisations to get an ISO 9001/ 2000 certification;
  • Establishment of services for membership companies: advisory services on foreign trade, organisation of regional trade fairs, further education for staff of membership companies etc. Seven of the organisations have build up comprehensive "Business Information Centers" (BIC) offering a wide range of information under one roof ("One Shop Stop").
  • Networking – between Indian and German BMOs and between the Indian Partner organisations. Two networks have been organized: SICAN, the "South Indian Chambers and Associations Network" and WeCAN the "Women Entrepreneurs of Chambers and Associations Network". To date, the officially registered WeCAN gained an excellent standing: it is organizing annually a special trade fair for companies guided by women. On behalf of it’s membership organisations the network is organizing foreign trade relations, it is engaged in entrepreneurship development activities etc.

In 2010 a similar program was introduced in Northern India.
